Halal Food:
Attached in a copy of the written information provided to the hospital. Since that time, a more complete list of requirements was provided.
Halal meat is purchased through an approved meat wholesaler. Cooking utensils, serving utensils and dishes were purchased and are utilized exclusively for Muslim patients and Halal food. Food and utensils are stored, food prepared, and dishes washed separately.
General Health Services:
First preference must be that all care provided by a person of the same sex as the patient or, only under extreme conditions should other sex health care provider be used: e.g. a person's sickness may become worse or the person is in life danger, and no same sex person is available in time. This also applies to Emergency Room care. whenever possible, same sex health care professionals must provide health care.
The hospital agrees to this:
If the wife or daughter must be seen by a health care provider of the opposite sex, the husband or father , or another close relative whom she has allowed according to the Islamic ruling, is to be permitted to be with her during examination or other health care procedure. If health care provider is of the same sex, there is no need for this.
only women are permitted to deliver babies. Permission should be given for the calling of the Athan in he ear of the newborn immediately after it's birth. If the husband is not present, a pious Muslim may provide this service. This must be a female except in cases of emergency. also, only in emergency may a male deliver the baby.
Only in emergency cases may a veiled Muslimah ( Muslim women who wears a face veil ) remove her veil in the presence of male physicians and/or nurses.
Separate rooms of the use of a curtain must be utilized in a Muslim women's room in the event of a hospital stay.
At admission to the hospital, anyone identifying themselves as Muslim will be asked if they wish to be cared for along Islamic guidelines. Computers will identify them as such. If the person answers in the positive, all records will be identified and Islamic protocol will be instituted.
Muslims are encouraged to eat and drink with their right hand. In cases where the right hand is injured, the left hand may be used.
After urinating or having bowel movement, Muslims clean their private parts with water as well as using tissue. This is called istinga. In the case of a Muslim patient who in bedridden, the person who is caring for the patient may assist by pouring water over the private parts as well as the usual washing. The private parts must remain covered and not looked at ( except for medical examination). During the cleaning of the private parts, gloves must be worn and cleaned with water and dried, using paper the thickness of a pad or towel.
When it is necessary for a Muslimah to be moved from bed to bed or to stretcher, It's permissible for a male staff to move her only in emergency cases. In these cases, the staff must take great care not to touch her body.
Medication must not have pork content ( i.e. gelatin capsules, insulin made form pork, etc.)
Lotions and soaps must have no pork ( tallow) content. The names os whosalers who sell appropriate produces was provided, as well as a list of commercial products that are within the guidelines.
Muslims must not be interrupted while in prayer.
A Qur'an should be available for Muslim patient ( a translation in English/Arabic)
In surgery, notification that this is a Muslim patient should accompany. Covering must continue except when an area must be uncovered because it is part of the surgical area and must be cleaned as part of a sterile field.
At death, only females may wash females, and males wash male bodies. We have a specific procedure for this and will provide you with a detailed explanation and Muslims to provide the service when necessary.
Muslims to not participate in organ donation and do not allow autopsy except when required to do so by law. Please do not ask for these.
A list of Muslim patient is available daily for the Muslim Chaplain who is in visiting rotation.
Chaplain services are available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week by pager. Also, Muslim chaplains visit the hospital at least 3 times weekly.
These were all approved and put into place by the hospital.
